May Give-a-way ~ My First Pinterest Project

One of my April Goals was to create a project from Pinterest and I met it! That means you get a give-a-way!

I’m not a big jewelry person, but I do love necklaces and I have a ton of them!  I’ve wanted something unique to hang my necklaces on for quite some time and could never find the right thing in the store, but I did find many ideas on Pinterest!  So for my April craft project, I made a jewelry hanger!  I decided to make a few as gifts (I haven’t made my own yet) and I love the way they turned out!  An alternative use for these is to get mini clothespins from the craft store and hang photos on them, instead of jewelry!

I started with these solid wood frames, which have 10×10 openings from the craft store.  $12.99

I used gray primer since I was planning to paint them dark colors. $5.49 at the local hardware store.

After priming, I added color and consequently, fell in love with spray painting! Each color costs roughly $5-6. I also added a clear coat protectant, so that was another $5-6.

After the paint was dry (about 24-48 hours after the final coat depending upon the paint), I stapled strands of 20 lb picture hanging wire, which is about $2 per 9 foot roll at the craft store or your local hardware store.

Finally, I embellished the frames with ribbon, leather cord, buttons, and rhinestone stickers. I used a combination of staples and Modge Podge (puzzle glue) to keep the ribbon in place. I threaded the leather cording through the buttons and where necessary, used hot glue to hold the buttons down.  Each frame cost about $10 to embellish.  So there you have it, a Do It Yourself (DIY) jewelry or picture hanger for about $30 each, depending on the materials you choose to use.  To save money, you could easily pick the frames and embellishments up at a second hand shop for less.

The embellishments can be fun or classy!  I like the black one that I made for a friend, but I know my sister is going to love the last one, which I made for her!

Now, what’s in it for you? Spread the word to your friends and get a chance to win your own jewelry or picture hanger! I will let the winner choose the color and provide input for the embellishments!

To be entered to win:

1.  Like my Facebook Page – Photographs By Mary Jane.

2.  Comment on this blog post telling me what you would do with the jewelry/picture hanger if you win. Don’t forget, Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13!

3.  Share this give-a-way opportunity with your friends.

One winner will be chosen randomly from the entries on Saturday, May 5 at 11:59 PM Eastern.

Job well done! I am so not crafty, but am obsessed with Pinterest and saw this idea and fell in love with it! I think I would use mine more for pictures, since I love taking them and have so many but so little space to hang frames in our house :-) Great idea for a giveaway!!! Great job … by the way how do you find the time ;-)

Mary Jane MooneyMay 2, 2012 - 8:47 pm

Thanks, Rebekah! LOL – I have no idea where I find the time. Lots of multitasking and very little sleep!

If I win, I would use it as a frame to display my wedding jewelry and the flower clips for my hair. I would put a shelf under it with some other important wedding stuff. Oh and maybe a small wedding photo in hanging with the jewels!

Mary Jane MooneyMay 2, 2012 - 10:20 pm

Great idea, Lexy!

I would use it to display more pictures of my kiddos. I never have enough space/frames for their pictures.

These are really cute! I haven’t ventured on to pininterest yet, but it appears that I should b/c I’m missing out on cute things (or maybe I shouldn’t b/c I already have a really long to do list – LOL). I really like the pic you took for adding the wire, love that you set up all your tools. You’re doing a great job w/ your photos and website!
Ok, so the rules say if I want to win one of your cute projects I need to post about what I would do with it… I think until I get my hands on it, i would say it’s a toss up between hanging it in my room (or bathroom if it’s hot pink and black) for earrings and necklaces… or putting it downstairs w/ pictures of the kids clipped to it… although I’m leaning towards necklaces because I really need to get them out of the twisted mess they are ‘stored’ in and get them hanging so I can wear one each day w/o having to untangle them all.
So, there you have it – I’m selfish and I’m going to use it for me :)
I want to win – pick me! pick me!! :)

Glad you like them! You should definitely check Pinterest out, but beware, it’s addicting! :)

Wow, you never cease to amaze me (and the rest of the world). I like Lexy’s idea for hair clips but before reading that I was thinking it would be nice to take to work and hang pictures on it there. So now I am torn what I will do when I WIN! LOL.
